Logger Education to Advance Professionalism (LEAP)

Administered by Northeast Forest Stewardship Project

Voluntary Logger Education Program – Satisfies requirements of Sustainable Forestry Initiative. Continuing Education required to maintain accreditation.

Core Components: Topics and credits as follows to be completed within two calendar years

 

Notice the following changes in the procedure for completing the LEAP Program.

                            We changed the timeline for completing the secondary curriculum. Once you've completed the "Provisional Certification", you now have two years to complete the "Full Certification" requirements. This change has made the tracking of your certifications much easier, hence keeping administrative costs down. The change only affects loggers who have not received their Full Certification yet!

 

The Leap Program

 

To maintain LEAP certification, a graduate is required to participate in 16 credits (2 days) of related continuing education programs or

 

Step 1. Provisional LEAP Certification

A logger must complete 24 hours (three days) of instruction, plus any prerequisite reading requirements, in the primary curriculum to achieve provisional status. 

Step 2. Full LEAP Certification

A logger must complete three additional workshops, two of which must be: 1) Forest Water Quality, Erosion Control & Wetlands, and 2) First Aid for Loggers (a current American Red Cross Card will Suffice).   The third Workshop – an elective of your choice either offered by LEAP or offered by another organization, (as long as it meets LEAP’s criteria).  These three workshops must be completed within two years of obtaining provisional status to achieve full certification.

Step 3. Maintaining Full Certification -Continuing Education (CE)

To maintain full certification, a logger is required to participate in 2 days of related CE programs or public service, within 2 calendar years of completing the secondary curriculum and each 2 years thereafter.  See CE Form.

Requirements for Continued Certification

To maintain LEAP certification, a graduate is required to participate in 12 credits (2 days) of related continuing education programs or public service, within 2 calendar years of graduation and each 2 years thereafter. A minimum of six credits must be earned in Category I. 

Category I: Logging/Forestry Seminars and Meetings

Any logging or industry related classes, or seminars offered within Vermont or other state regional organizations may apply. Credits will be awarded based on the following: one hour of instruction time = one credit (no limit to credits earned in this category.)

Category II: Formal Education/Self Improvement

Credits will be awarded for multiple classes leading towards a degree or certificate (up to six credits can be earned in this category). Examples: High School GED; College Courses; EMT Courses; Certified Wellness Program; Computer Courses; etc.

Category III: Community and Professional Service

Community and Professional Service Credits will be awarded for participation and leadership in community and professional organizations (up to six credits can be earned in this category). Examples of Community Service: Selectmen; School Board; Conservation Commission; Scout Leader; School Presentations; Etc. Examples of Professional Service: Vermont Forest Products Association - Committees; Forest Resources Association - Committees; Northeast Loggers' Association - Committees; Special Vermont Forestry Committees/Task Groups; Et
